Sue and John Wieland began collecting in the mid-1980s. Within a few years, the collection reflected its present organizing idea: the image of the house. This focus complemented John Wieland’s personal interest in homebuilding and the growth of his company, John Wieland Homes and Neighborhoods, into one of the Southeast’s largest homebuilders.
For many years, the collection hung in his corporate offices. In 2010, the Wielands created the wareHOUSE to bring all of their art under one roof. They purchased a furniture showroom on Atlanta’s Westside and transformed it into an exhibition space. The galleries have been expanded on several occasions to accommodate new acquisitions.
In 2017, a monograph on the collection, Homeward, was released. Copies may be purchased through The High Museum gift shop.
